Hi All, 
 Below please find instruction for this wees Geography lessons:
  • Lesson 1: (Monday 23rd March 2020)
Topic: Services & Functions on OS Maps
Textbook pages: 99-101
Learning Intention: List & Identify several different services and functions of a town from an OS map.
Lesson Activities: 
1) Read page 99 to gain information and understanding about the variety of functions (things a town can provide) of a town.
2) Complete the 'My Geography Moment' task at the bottom of page 99. To do this, state the name of your hometown/village. Below that, draw a table with two columns and at least four rows. Entitle one column Function and the other Explanation. Aim to list at least 4 functions of your town/village and explain how you know this function exists in your town/village. For example, Curragh-function=Defense, Explanation= Defense forces training and military camp.   
3) Using the standardized OS map key on page 80, find the symbols used on an OS map to show the functions mentioned in the table of functions on page 99 and illustrate each symbol in your copy under the appropriate heading.  
  • Lesson 2: (Wednesday 25th March 2020) 
Topic: Services & Functions on OS Maps
Textbook pages: 98, 100 & 102
Learning Intention: List & Identify several different services and functions of a town from an OS map.
Activities:
1) Using the map on page 98, list at least four functions of the town of Drogheda and give at least one six figure grid reference to a feature or area that represents this function.
2) Using the map on page 100, list at least four functions of the town of Bundoran and give at least one six figure grid reference to a feature or area that represents this function.
3) Using the map on page 102, list at least six functions of the city of Dublin and give at least one six figure grid reference to a feature or area that represents this function.
  • Lesson 3: (Friday 27th March 2020)
Topic: Revision-OS Maps
Textbook pages: 69-104
Learning Intention: Recap the key geographical skills needed to use an OS map for a variety of purposes.
Activities:
1) Create an information booklet titled 'How to use an OS map'. In your booklet you should include the following sections. 
Section 1: Why are OS Maps important?
Section 2: What information can I get from an OS map?
Section 3: How do I give a six figure grid reference for a location/feature on an OS map?
Section 4: How do I calculate area on an OS Map?
Section 5: How do I calculate the distance of straight and curved lines on an OS Map?
Section 6: How can I tell about height difference on an OS Map?
Section 7: How do I recognise various types of rural settlement on an OS Map?
Section 8: What symbols represent various functions of a town on an OS Map?

Remember this is an information booklet to aid a person who has never used an OS Map before. Ensure your instructions are clear and easy to follow. Exceptional booklets will also include step by step diagrams to aid their written instruction. You will have another lesson next week to continue work on this booklet.
